Learn To Quit
Learn To Quit is an evidence-based smoking cessation app for smokers with serious mental illness (SMI). Developed by Dr. Roger Vilardaga and Smashing Ideas, Learn To Quit encompasses the potential accomplishments of collaboration between academics and industry leaders. Learn To Quit was developed using an iterative process and was also informed by user interviews identifying the challenges and facilitators to engagement of a smoking app among smokers with SMI, as well as research on using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for smoking cessation.
RESEARCH ON LEARN TO QUIT
Past research involved user interviews of smokers with SMI who have engaged extensively with QuitPal, the National Cancer Institute's quit smoking app. Usability problems were identified in QuitPal as well as strategies to increase and incentivize engagement in a smoking cessation app.

Using interactive wireframes of paper and pen prototypes of Learn To Quit, Dr. Roger Vilardaga conducted UX interviews with a diverse group of five smokers with SMI. I transcribed the interviews and used thematic analysis to identify the consistent barriers and facilitators of smoking cessation app use. Findings were presented at the 2016 International Society for Research on Internet Interventions conference.

Prototypes of Learn TO Quit
Based on our research findings and user interviews, I designed some paper and pen prototypes of cartoons explaining the ACT exercises. It goes through the three main components of ACT - noticing your urges, letting them pass, and doing actions in line with your values. Additionally, it teaches users how to use the patch and lozenge - two nicotine replacement medications recommended by the US Clinical Practice Guidelines.
